TODAY AT GRACE

WORSHIP LEADERS SCHEDULE (The ROTA) can be found by clicking here.

HAPPY MOTHERS’ DAY to all mothers in our midst. Today we give special thanks for the countless ways that you have embodied God’s steadfast love for the children of earth.

THE RT. REV. DON TAYLOR joins us this morning at the 11 a.m. service to preach, celebrate the Eucharist, and confirm this year’s class of candidates. He will also lead our 10 a.m. Adult Education class this morning, with a conversation on the state of the Diocese and the place of the Episcopal Church within the Anglican Communion.

NO EVENING ADULT CLASS TODAY due to Mothers’ Day, but join us next Sunday May 18 at 7:15 p.m. for the Songwriters Circle featuring Bjorn Quenemoen with Stephanie Bauman.

CENTERING PRAYER GROUP TODAY AT 5PM. Facilitated by Joe Budenholzer. Meets in the Reception Room every Sunday at 5 p.m.

CHILDREN’S YOUTH MINISTRY UPDATES

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL will meet June 30-July 2, 1-4 p.m. We are using an Episcopal curriculum where kids experience Bible stories through an interactive combination of music, art, science, games, worship and drama in an imaginary Rainforest canopy. VBS is open to children ages 4-9. However, we always welcome older kids to participate as helpers. To sign up, please contact Stephanie Bauman at sbauman@gracechurchnyc.org

SUNDAY SCHOOL occurs each week at 10 a.m. for Pre-K through 5th grade. We are interested in adding to our group of enthusiastic and talented teachers. No previous experience is required. If you are passionate about the spiritual growth of our children and are interested in becoming a teacher, please contact Stephanie Bauman.

PARENTS OF YOUNG CHILDREN - Thank you for bringing your children to church! They are an important part of our worship life at Grace Church, and they help make the service more enjoyable for everyone. Some resources you may wish to know about include: books, children's Bibles, and Gospel-based coloring leaflets in the rack near the baptismal font and in the back of the church (children are more than welcome to color and read during church), nursery care for infants and toddlers up to 3 years, and during the 11 a.m. service a Children’s Chapel during the sermon. The Reception Room is also available for parents and children who may need a brief change of scenery.

CHILDREN IN CHURCH are a blessing. Sometimes the service can be a long haul for the little ones. Everyone understands that children squirm and often add their own uniquely timed responses to the worship. Prolonged talking or crying, however, especially in the reverberate acoustics of Grace Church, does eventually disrupt the experience for others, and we ask parents to avail themselves of the options listed above. Message for the whole congregation: Children learn best by doing. Give thanks to the Lord that our church is full of children, and that their parents care enough about worshiping God to bring them.

CHILDREN’S BOOKS AND COLORING SUPPLIES can be found near the north door of the church. Kids, help yourselves at any point during the service, but please put the books back before you leave. Books are replenished regularly.

MUSIC AT GRACE

CONGRATULATIONS to all of our choristers and Adult Choir members for a spectacular concert last Tuesday evening. The music was divine, and the reception afterwards a fun and spirited affair. Thanks to all parent helpers who labored long hours to make the whole evening a success.

CHORAL SOCIETY SPRING CONCERT is Friday, May 16 at 8 p.m. and features Durufle’s REQUIEM, Mass for Four Voices by Byrd, Psalm 100 by Mendelsohn, Song for Athene by Tavener. Tickets can be purchased at the door on the night of the concert for $20.

BACH AT NOON is celebrating its sixth season. Originally born out of the musical meditations offered post 9/11 these programs feature the organ compositions of Johann Sebastian Bach played between 12:20 and 12:50 p.m. Tuesday through Friday. The Village Voice voted Bach at Noon as one of the best reasons to attend Church last season.

SATURDAY/SUNDAY ORGAN MEDITATION series takes place every Saturday and Sunday at 4 p.m. that there isn’t a special liturgy (first Sunday of the month) or wedding taking place in the church.

ADULT EDUCATION AT GRACE

STATE SPONSORED TORTURE & THE SOUL OF AMERICA - The war on terror has made us painfully aware that American interrogators have employed methods of torture to extract information from individuals suspected of plotting future horrific crimes. Is it morally acceptable to use torture to protect the nation? Can ‘enhanced interrogation methods’ be in accord with the Geneva Conventions and other international human rights treaties that America has ratified? Grace Church parishioner Andrew Blane, long involved in human rights, is among those who believe that the soul of America is at stake in the answer we give to these questions, and he will lead us in a timely discussion of the issue. Next Sunday at 10 a.m.

SONGWRITERS CIRCLE NEXT SUNDAY-Join us next Sunday May 18 at 7:15 p.m. for the Songwriters Circle featuring Bjorn Quenemoen with Stephanie Bauman.

WOMEN’S BIBLE STUDY meets every Wednesday from 10:30-11:30 a.m. in the Reception Room. Come join us as we discuss the scriptures through the lens of the liturgical year.

WEDNESDAY EVENING BIBLE STUDY meets at 7:15 p.m. in the Reception Room. Email The Reverend Linda Bartholomew for more information lbartholomew@gracechurchnyc.org.

OUTREACH

BICENTENNIAL CONCERT – What better way to launch our bicentennial celebrations than with a concert to benefit the poor and homeless of the city? Mark your calendars for Tuesday, June 3, 7:30 p.m. for the Sing for Hope: One Voice Evening of Art Songs and Opera. This magnificent event will honor the 200 years of reaching out into the city by sending proceeds to Partners in Grace, the 17 organizations that we have selected for their excellence in working with and for the homeless of New York City.

HELPING THE HOMELESS – As the weather warms the numbers of street people attempting to spend the night in the church doorways tends to increase. Grace Church supports a number of local agencies that offer the sustained and substantial type of assistance that will empower these individuals to reach a better life. The people working in these agencies tell us that it is counterproductive to give money on the street, and allow the overnight camps to form; it discourages those who need long term solutions from going to the places where they can get them. We have prepared a handy reference card with contact information to the New York City Rescue Mission, and the Bowery Residence Communities. You will find the cards in the narthex. Please help yourself and distribute when approached.

PARISH LIFE

CONGRATULATIONS TO DOUG SKRYPEK, who was elected to the Vestry last Tuesday night. Doug will fill the unexpired term of the late Jock Newbold. Doug is the head usher at the 9 am service as well as a member of the Investment Committee. He is married to Shingmin Lai, and is the father of Alexander, 3 ½, and Vivienne, 8 months. By day Doug is a Managing Director with Parthian Capital.

LAW DAY CHORAL EVENSONG this year honors Grace Parishioner Judge Laura Taylor Swain (see article in the May Epistle ) and is open to all members of the Bar and Bench in recognition of their vocation on Wednesday, May 21 at 6 p.m. and takes place at St. Paul’s Chapel on Broadway and Fulton Street. RSVP by May 19 to The Rev. Richard Sloan at 212-316-7427 or rsloan@dioceseny.org.

SAVE THE DATE FOR THE JUNE 8 PICNIC! Come one, come all, for a lovely afternoon of hamburgers, hot dogs, and fun on the lawn and playground of Huntington Close. The picnic follows the 11 a.m. service, when we will thank our Sunday School teachers and Acolytes for all the hard work they do throughout the year. Please contact Stephanie Bauman if you would like to volunteer or donate food items.

FAREWELL TO THE DANAHERS – Plan to be at Grace Church on Sunday, June 29 when we bid farewell to Bill, Claire, Phoebe, and Thea Danaher. As you know, Bill has been elected to be Dean of the Faculty at Huron University College in London, Ontario, Canada. Plans for farewell festivities are in the works, but for now mark the date.

THE 20s/30s GROUP meets on a monthly basis. For more information, or to be included on our email list, contact Chris Shoemaker via email: csxtraml@gmailcom.

ALTAR FLOWERS - We are blessed to enjoy beautiful floral arrangements on the altars of Grace Church thanks to donations made by members of the parish. If you would like to commemorate the life of a departed loved one, or give thanks for a happy occasion or anniversary, please consider the gift of flowers for the church. Your donation of $125 provides flowers on the altars of both the church and the chantry arranged by a parish volunteer. If you would like to donate professionally arranged flowers, we can refer you to a local florist. Please email Bill Nave at bnave@gracechurchnyc.org or call 212-254-2000 ext. 100 to select a date and make your donations for the future.

PRAYER LIST - If you would like to have a name added to the prayer list, please email Bill Nave: bnave@gracechurchnyc.org or 212-254-2000, ext 100 by Wednesday. Names will be read during the services for four weeks and printed in the bulletin unless notified otherwise.
